Video: Workshop Moment with Dawn Little Torres, RYT

This Journey Through the Energetic Body focused on the universal  energy centers of the body called “chakras.”

The chakras form part of a subtle energy body, and are located along the central channel in front of the spine, as Dawn illustrated. Each chakra is thought to possess a number of ‘petals’ or ‘spokes’ and they are associated with sounds and colors. Midway in this video clip, Dawn is activating the heart chakra with tapping and saying the sound “yum”.

Chakra energy is more subtle than the physical body but the state of energy balance will reflect in our physical and mental health. In this three hour workshop, Dawn took us through all of the major chakras, which are:

1. Starting with the ROOT chakra at the base of the spine
2. Moving up through the SACRAL chakra
3. To the SOLAR PLEXUS
4. The HEART center
5. The THROAT
6. The BROW or THIRD EYE chakra
7. Finally the CROWN chakra which subtly connects to the energy that is all around us in this universe we live in…a universe of space and energy as described by modern physicists.

We ended the session with the morning wake up exercises called the Five Tibetans that open all of the chakras. You see the first of five in this video clip.

Please comment if you attend this workshop, and help us spread the word about the great classes and extraordinary teachers at Yoga Circle Studio.

Video: Yin Yoga with Shelly Dorland

Yin Yoga directs stimulation deep into the connective tissues of the body, such as ligaments, bones, and even the joints that are not excercised in dynamic muscle engaging forms of yoga. Yin describes a style of yoga that is denser, heavier, more feminine, contemplative, receptive, and passive. It’s opposite, Yang,  describes a brighter, hotter, dynamic, active and masculine approach to yoga.

In this Yin Yoga workshop we also explored the salutation to the moon – the moon aligning with Yin, while the sun aligns with Yang. The Moon sequence starts standing in MOUNTAIN POSE, lowering to CHAIR, then sweeping to FORWARD FOLD, and rising to MOUNTAIN POSE again.

Working the right side, lift the right foot and come to TREE and bend toward the right knee for LATERAL TREE. Step the right leg back into CRESENT LUNGE, and pivot feet to STANDING GODDESS POSE (HORSE). Fold into WIDE LEG FORWARD FOLD. Pivot feet again to WARRIOR 2, right foot leading to the back of the mat, then lower to TRIANGLE.  Pivot feet to the front mat left food leading to align for SIDE ANGLE, then balance forward into HALF MOON right leg in the air. Bring the right leg forward to the top of the mat in MOUNTAIN POSE.  Repeat on the left side to complete the FULL MOON sequence, called CHANDRA NAMASKAR.

Go slow; take your time; move with breath as you renew and receive the benefits of this Moon practice.  Thanks to Shelly for the wisdom of her teaching.
