Classes Are Moving On Monday, November 14th

Yes! The wall is coming down Monday, 11/14 — much sooner than we planned. Construction schedules depend on so many people who do the work, and in this case we have to move forward to take advantage of the sheetrock crew’s open week of availability.

This means that all classes are moving to Karen’s studio (pictured above) at 230 Avenue B, the pink church at Third and B effective Monday — beginning with Yoga Stretch at 6:45!

Enter through the garden as pictured on the map. Please do not knock on the church front doors — they access the choir loft apartment, which is rented. Doors to the studio are on the south side of the church, right at the end of the garden walkway. It’s a very easy walk through the garden, and pleasant too.

So on Sunday, 11/13, following Suzanne’s Yoga Dance class we will be bring out the champaigne, sushi and marking pens! Come, celebrate this big step in the expansion construction with eats, drinks and making your mark on the wall! We might even encourage a smashing good time, and will bring some hammers.

Better yet, come to Suzanne’s class for the last (yoga) dance in the old space!

Expansion Project Begins

Work has begun on the expansion of the Circle. The plan is to double the size of the current studio by the first of the year. As Builder Hank begins framing in the new walls, Karen was on her hands and knees patching a serious crack in the concrete floor.

Later this month the south wall of the existing studio (the one pictured above) will be removed to create one large, glorious space. Classes will continue at Karen’s art studio, located in the historic residential district at the corner of Third and Avenue B — it’s the pink church!

“We will need a little prayer (along with the small business loan from Columbia bank) to pull this off,” said Karen, holding tight a tub of concrete patching mix.

Yoga Therapies: Cancer Support

The following post is excerpted from Jillian McKee’s unpublished article “Great Poses for Cancer Patients” with many thanks.

With cancer already taking its toll upon the body, chemotherapy and/or radiation can have damaging effects. For this reason, many patients seek out alternative therapies, including yoga, to augment their traditional therapies as well as ease the associated side effects. Numerous reports have proven that yoga is a helpful tool in coping with the decreased immune system and nausea often associated with treatment.

Several clinical reports find that one hour a day of yoga, versus mild exercise and counseling, decreased nausea and contributed to a greater sense of well being. There are certain poses specifically designed to promote digestive health that provide the body with immense benefits. Yoga poses open the flow of the digestive tract and can help a patient who maybe experiencing chemotherapy’s side effects.

Keep in mind that the postures are just a portion of yoga practice. Pranayama, or Yogic breathing, meditation, and relaxation also will restore an individual’s spiritual, physical, emotional and mental health. Laughter Yoga also includes an option to lift a person’s spirit and bring about a positive state of being.

“While it’s not a cure for cancer, yoga enhances physical and emotional wellness—and brings a peace many patients had thought they’d lost forever.”
